Teachers And The Internet

Computer & Internet

Teachers and the Internet

The internet can be a valuable resource for teachers of all levels and subjects. From lesson plans, to fun activities, and research. You can also keep in touch with students and parents. No doubt the internet can be of use to a teacher. But, as a teacher, you need to be aware of what the internet should and should not be used for.

Teachers, learn to use the internet effectively! If you are a college education away from becoming a teacher, utilize the internet and online degrees in teaching.

Perhaps finding lesson plans is the number on reason teachers like the internet. They can readily find activities on a variety of subjects. But, don’t rely on this on a daily basis. You must do some long term planning for your classroom. Trying to find lesson plans should only be for enrichment activities, or, in instances where you just can’t think of anything or want more. You cannot be an effective teacher if you are getting your daily lesson plans from the internet.

The number two reason that teachers use the internet is probably to get worksheets. This is where the internet shines. Free, downloadable, printable worksheets are readily found on the internet. But agan, we need to caution you. Do not go here constantly looking for worksheets. Your classroom should actually be for the most part, work-sheet free. A lot of teachers don’t know this.

Worksheets can be a lazy way of teaching. However, worksheets are terrific for drilling on basic skills like math and language arts.

Doing daily drills on these are a good way to get students the basics. Extra fill in items, like coloring sheets and mazes are also a good idea for worksheets. But teaching with worksheets is probably not a good idea. Every good worksheet you find, save a copy and file it.

That way, you may never need to buy any worksheet books again!

Teachers can also create classroom websites. But be careful about privacy issues.

Email is the new way to stay in touch. Your school or district probably has an email set up for you. Know how to use it. Set up your parents with your email address and keep them informed. Get all parents on your email list.

You can send class updates, including projects and assignment due dates. You can also readily contact parents with concerns.

Use the internet to do some educational research. If you are having problems in class, do an online search. See if other teachers have the same problem and have solved it.

Teachers Say Internet Improves Quality of Education

More than eight out of ten teachers (84 percent) believe that computers and access to the Internet improve the quality of education, according to a survey by education technology nonprofit xyz company ( say ) , and 75 percent of teachers said the Internet is an important tool for finding new resources to meet new standards.

Two-thirds of teachers, however, agree the Internet is not well integrated into their classrooms and only 26 percent of them feel pressure to use it in learning activities.

Xyz company also found that nearly every teacher has access to the Internet at his or her school and 80 percent of classrooms have computers that are online. Seventy-seven percent of teachers agree that teachers without Internet access in the classroom are at a disadvantage.

Teachers cite multiple uses for the Internet, but most primarily see its potential as a research tool, and say it has not changed the way they teach. Forty-eight percent of teachers say the Internet has become an important tool for teaching over the last two years, yet across every demographic group of teachers, half or more use the Internet at school for less than 30 minutes a day.

Other findings from Xyz company’s survey include:

78 percent of teachers cited lack of time as the number one reason for not logging on to the Internet

46 to 50 percent list lack of equipment, speed of access or lack of technical support as hindering their use of online resources

44 percent of teachers cite lack of knowledge about how to use the Internet, and 32 percent list lack of leadership from the principal or administrators as reasons for not logging on.

Xyz company’s research suggests the critical challenge ahead is to find ways to help teachers go beyond the research functions of the Internet. Most teachers do not use the Internet in daily activities such as communication with students, parents and other teachers, or for organizational activities. Sixty-seven percent of teachers believe the Internet is not well integrated into their classroom. Those teachers most likely to use the Internet and say it is well integrated into their classrooms are sixth through eighth grade teachers.

Less than half of teachers use the Internet when building new lessons or engaging in classroom projects (42 percent), and an even greater number (62 percent) do not update lesson plans with material found online. Teachers in private and parochial schools engage in technology integration more often than teachers in public schools. Fifty-two percent of private and parochial teachers use the Internet for class projects and for updating lesson plans; compared to 40 percent of public school teachers who use the Internet for these activities.

Nearly three-quarters (73 percent) of teachers say they do not feel pressure to use the Internet in classroom instruction or the curriculum’s Of those teachers who reported feeling pressure, 54 percent say district administrators, colleagues and peers are the source of that pressure. Only 10 percent say the pressure comes from principals. The lack of pressure that teachers feel from principals suggests the need for more guidance to help principals learn how to best utilize technology to support education. In addition, learning how to provide leadership on educational technology is a new development area for many principals.

THE INTERNET’S PERCEIVED VALUE FOR TEACHERS

Even though a majority of teachers have still not used the Internet in their teaching, and even fewer have used it in a major way, there may be many reasons for this – the recent development of Internet tools and resources, the rapidity with which technologies are changing, the limited opportunity that teachers have had to see how the Internet can be used in their practice, and the rarity of fast and convenient Internet access. Some teachers who have not used the Internet may be looking forward to a day when they might. How do teachers see the Internet’s potential value for them in the near future? Do most teachers see the Internet as a valuable or an essential resource in their teaching, as something of limited value, or perhaps something that is not even needed?

Even among teachers who did not have access to the Internet either at home or in their own classroom, one-third regarded the Internet as an essential teaching resource.

CORRELATES OF INTERNET USE AND PERCEIVED VALUE

Clearly, the access that teachers have to the Internet as well as their teaching responsibilities affects the likelihood that they will use the Internet themselves or with their students and, to some extent, whether they have come to value this resource in their teaching. This section reports our analysis of the degree to which different factors are correlated with teachers’ Internet use and perceived value.

MEASURES OF USE EMPLOYED

Three measures of Internet use are employed, and each measure is based on two or three dichotomous criteria (i.e., meeting or not meeting a given standard). Thus, each teacher received a score of 0, 1, 2, or 3 in each of these categories.

A teacher’s TEACHER USE score is the number of the following three criteria met:

Did they get information from the Internet on a weekly basis?

Did they send e-mails to teachers at other schools at least 5 times during the year?

Did they ever post information or student work to the World Wide Web during the year?

A teacher’s STUDENT RESEARCH USE score is the number of these three criteria met:

Did they have students use the World Wide Web in at least 3 lessons during the year?

Did they have students use the Web at least 10 times?

Did they choose an Internet browser software as one of the three most valuable pieces of software used in their teaching?

A teacher’s STUDENT PROJECTS AND PUBLISHING score comes from three criteria as well:

Did they have students do e-mail in at least 3 lessons?

Did they have a class participate in a cross-school collaborative project?

Did they do a lesson where students became expert in a topic and put their information on the Web?

Finally, a teacher’s PERCEIVED VALUE score is the combination of whether they believed desktop e-mail for themselves was essential and whether they believed classroom Web access was essential.

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN INTERNET ACCESS AND USE

Certainly teachers have to have access to the Internet in order to use it. But what kind of access makes the biggest difference in use and perceived value—whether the teacher has access at home or somewhere in school; whether the school access is in her own classroom; or whether her classroom access is through a modem or through high-speed/LAN-based direct access? Our data provides some evidence on this issue.

In terms of a teacher’s own professional Internet use, having a modem at home may be almost as important for teachers as having one in their classroom. Teachers with a home modem but no access at school at all have nearly the same Teacher Use score as teachers with an Internet connection in their classroom but no modem at home (.23 vs. .20). Moreover, teachers

Lesson Plans For Teaching Internet Search Skills to High School Students

Computer & Internet

The following three lessons are designed for high school students in order to teach the correct use of search engines. The lessons show how to choose keywords, distinguish credible sources from non-authoritative sources, and ethically use resources. The objective is to get students beyond the cursory Google search and into pages of relevant and authoritative search results.

Lesson 1: What is a search engine and how do I use one for research?

Definitions:

Internet: A worldwide system of interconnected networks allowing for data transmission among millions of computers

Internet Search Engine: a computer program that indexes and retrieves documents or files from the internet according to queries from users

Query: a request made to an internet search engine

Keyword Search: A search for documents containing one or more words specified by a user in a search engine text box

Boolean Search: A search that uses the words AND, OR, and NOT along with keywords to focus a search

Try these searches:

Assume you are doing a research paper on the topic of “blue whales.”

1. Use Google. Type into the search box: facts about blue whales. Look at the top ten results.

2. Use Excite.com. Type into the search box: blue whales. Look at the top ten results. Next click on “advanced search” just above the search box. In the “exact phrase” box, type: blue whales. In the “none of these words” box, type: shop buy. In the language box, select English. Click the search button and compare the results with those you got earlier.

3. Use Bing.com. Type into the search box: blue whales. Look at the top ten results.

Notes on advanced search options

For most search engines, advanced search is a simplified way of doing a Boolean search. The Boolean operator AND narrows a search by requiring all key words to be present in the retrieved records. The Excite search engine does this via “all of these words” or “exact phrase” boxes. OR broadens a search, retrieving records with one, two, or all of the key words. Excite uses a box called “any of these words” to do the OR function. Use the OR operator if your topic has several synonyms. NOT excludes a word or words from the search, equivalent to the “none of these words” box on Excite.

More exercises

1. Go to excite.com and type in the search box: Elvis. Next, click on advanced search. What do you need to do if you want results to exclude Elvis impersonators and Elvis merchandise?

2. What keywords might be useful if you are planning a science fair project about trajectories of different bullets? About the vitamin C content of fruit juices? About the flammability of building materials?

Lesson 2: Evaluating sources for credibility

Your teachers give you certain requirements about the resources you may use for projects and papers because not all resources are equal. Particularly on the internet, where anybody can get a website, the student must evaluate sources to be sure they either come from a reliable site or a reliable author.

Authoritative sites often end in “.edu” indicating the site belongs to a university or college, such as www.ncat.edu for North Carolina A&T State University. Sites ending in “.gov” indicate the site is maintained by a local or national government body such as www.irs.gov for the Internal Revenue Service. Sites ending in “.org” are often non-profit organizations which may be reliable sources so long as you take into account their agenda (environmentalist, religious, political, humanitarian, etc.) Sites ending in “.com” should be evaluated to see if the information on the site is consistent with information from print resources or known authoritative websites.

Exercises

Look at the following websites and decide if they could be authoritative sources, possibly reliable sources needing verification, or questionable sources:

www.ala.org

www.nationalenquirer.com

www.ncsu.edu

www.answersingenesis.org

www.atheists.org

www.aclu.org

www.noaa.gov

Lesson 3: Ethical Use of Resources

Using another person’s words or original ideas as your own is stealing—no different than using their car or their bank account without permission. When using the exact words of another, enclose them in quotation marks and properly cite the source of the quote. Use footnotes or parenthetical notes to give proper credit for the ideas of others that you have incorporated into your own paper or project. Citations include the author, title, and publication information for your source and are intended to give enough information to enable a reader of your paper to find the source if they wish. For internet sources, the citation includes the website address and the date on which you accessed the information. Teachers and professors will tell you what style to use for citations. Most high schools teach the use of MLA style.

Exercises

Write correct MLA citations for the following, using your MLA documentation guide:

1. http://lib.mansfield.edu/newbery.cfm

2. http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/about.html

3. http://www.sbc.org/bfm/default.asp

How the Internet Improves People’s Lives

Overview

There are no doubt in people’s minds that the Internet has made a significant difference in improving the lives of many people.  With the Internet, people today:

  • Can find information with the ease of just a few mouse clicks
  • Work from home
  • Communicate and share with others
  • Have better means of expressing their ideas and creativity
  • Have more sources of entertainment
  • Generate residual income
  • Easy Access to Information

With a computer, Internet access, and an Internet browser, anyone can find almost any information about anything from the comfort of their home!

Before the Internet, people used actual hard copy prints in the library, like the Britannica Encyclopedia or magazine issues to do research.  Today, much of the traditional information is available online.  Britannica Encyclopedia is now available online.  Also look at wikipedia.org.  Information there is published in 10 different languages.  The English section alone holds almost 3 million articles!  What library on the planet has that kind of capacity!  News articles are no longer limited to hard copy because newspapers now publish online.  Take a look at Mercury News (a San Jose, California, newspaper publisher).  The same is true for the New York Times!

These are just but a small sample from the vast information sources of the Internet.  Because the Internet is such a mainstream source of information, people may take it for granted.  However, it is “the” biggest improvement to people’s lives, whether they realize it or not.

Work Anywhere

The Internet is allowing people to work anywhere now.  One doesn’t have to be sitting in front of their office desk to work.  Through the Internet people can work at home, at a café, the beach, or anywhere. Continue reading

Use of Computer And Internet For an Income.

Computer & Internet

Computer and internet is now a days a very important part of our life and its importance is not unknown to anyone but I have seen that Normally in India most of the persons are not well aware of computer & Internet’s importance. People normally use the computer and internet just to perform some tasks related to computer and internet, for example: to mail some documents, for entertainment purpose and even some times Childs and computer/Internet users use computer and internet to play the games only and now a days in internet some networking sites are very popular so that some person normally use computer and internet to access them But I have seen that apart these many more uses are there of computer and internet.

In developed countries and in technically and educationally advanced countries peoples are using computer and Internet for various usages even as an option of regular income. They perform their home based task/job; they use it for their freelance work and for marketing, advertising and making revenue from it. It doesn’t mean that in India peoples are not doing are using the computer and internet for same such tasks like advertising, marketing, online income, freelance, revenue etc, they are also doing but the counting of those people is very few.

I felt the importance and requirement of this article titled the Use of Computer and internet for an Income because apart of computer and internet’s usage of entertainment, its usage of normal mailing, its usage of gaming one can use it for an income. There is only need to know the ways that how one can have an income online or through computer regularly. One need to know how to outsource their work through Computer and Internet, how to Freelance, How to Advertise, And for what other we can use?  There are various options like advertising, content writing, article writing, blogging, Online Marketing, Online Teaching, Online Selling Purchasing and all these options are money making and peoples are gaining. They are getting income/ revenue or in other words we can say that they are utilizing computer and internet and when we can utilize something then we can say that we are using that so as for as my point of view is concerned this is how we must use computer and internet if we will start using in this way then automatically we will start having an income and revenue.

Computer Internet Security Software – Security Software Essentials

Computer & Internet

If you are going to hook up your computer to the internet without having any up to date internet security software in place, be aware that you could get compromised before you can even blink your eye.

It is highly recommended to at least have a working anti-virus program installed before going online.

If you don’t take this precaution, your computer will be very vulnerable to infection. Your computer, being a security risk also means that you put other people at risk by spreading viruses or other malware from your infected computer.

Anti-virus program

Anti-spyware/malware program

Firewall

Viruses have been around since the dawn of the internet and come in different flavors. A virus replicates itself and once it is activated starts wreaking havoc, like erasing files or in the worst case scenario preventing your computer from starting up.

These days most anti-virus software will provide both virus and spyware protection. Keep in mind that a dedicated anti-spyware program will generally do a much better job of protecting you from spyware than a standalone antivirus program. A combination of both programs will provide a more complete protection against the wide range of malware threats on the internet. They are similar, but complimentary programs. All commercial anti-virus programs also come with an e-mail scanner,

Last but not least, you should have a firewall in place. A software firewall usually means the difference between an anti-virus program and an internet security suite. The latter always comes with a bundled firewall. The firewall monitors and controls which applications are allowed to get access to the internet and vice versa. The danger of a software firewall is that it can be quite confusing to configure for the average PC user. That is why a router ,a hardware firewall, is preferable to a software firewall.

The above is the basic internet security software everyone should be using while going online. All the programs are available in their free or commercial versions.

Computer Internet Security: 10 Key Questions To Ask Before Buying Internet Security Software

Computer & Internet

Congratulations on making a very wise decision regarding your personal computer internet security with respect to buying antivirus software. If by some chance you are reading this article and are still unsure of the need for an internet security system for your computer and /or network, I invite you to read my earlier article Computer Internet Security: How Viruses Can Destroy Your E-Business.

Now that you are ready to take the plunge and spend some money on internet security products such as antivirus software, it is important to understand exactly what this protective software does. Basically antivirus software has three goals:

To prevent a virus infection from reaching your computer/network system before any damage can be done. The antivirus software has a database containing the virus identification (called signatures) of all known viruses (at the time the software was created), and this can run into thousands of signatures. When you download information to your computer or network from an outside source, be it the Internet or a disk, the antivirus program scans the incoming information for any of the virus signatures that are in its database. If a virus is identified, you are notified, before the downloaded information is allowed entry into your computer or network. Provide a first line of defence against incoming virus threats, if the software is installed on a computer network, so that the network administrator has time to take action to stop the virus from entering the system, or if already there, keep it from spreading and then disinfect (clean) any parts of the network that have been corrupted by the virus. To take the necessary steps to clean and repair your computer and/or network by either eliminating the infection and repairing damaged files or moving the corrupted files to a safe or quarantine area so that no further damage can be done by the virus.

Understanding what an internet security system should do is only one part of the journey. It is also very important to be able to make an informed decision as to the best internet security software that will meet your requirements from the many internet security products currently available.

Here are 10 key questions to ask about any computer internet security you may be planning to purchase.

I sincerely hope that using the questions provided above as your buying guide will help you to make an informed decision about the best internet security for your computing needs when looking at the many different internet security software reviews and products.

Stay tuned for my next article when we look at some of the symptoms of an infected computer and/or network to help determine if you indeed have a computer virus. (For those of you who are still determined to “live on the edge” and ignore the need for good computer internet security.)

Pc Shield Deluxe – Want Protection Went Using The Internet? Don’t Buy This

Computer & Internet

****What is it?****

Shield Deluxe 2009 is antivirus software powered by BitDefender that uses “integrated methods to scan for viruses and other nasty little things that may infect your computer and affect its performance. The Deluxe includes antivirus, anti spyware and adware and rootkit detection. Providing you don’t use your computer for anything “too dodgy” or visit “threatening sites” this should provide all the protection you need for safe internet use.

****System requirements****

The requirements for the Deluxe software is 128MB RAM and 10MB of hard-disc space for program installation. The requirements are minimal, but since most antivirus software programs are small and un-intrusive programs this is to be expected. Deluxe is compatible with many operating systems include Vista, XP, Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Windows ME, so even those of you with much older machines will be able to benefit from Deluxe.

****Downloading and installing****

This antivirus software is downloaded direct form PC Security Shields website. It is an extremely easy process that involves setting up an account and logging in, checking the “download” box, inputting all relevant card details and submitting the information. Within seconds the download will be sat in your on-line account ready for you to install.

The exact download time of the software will depend upon your computer and internet connection type, but as previously stated it is a very small program so shouldn’t take too long whatever your computer/internet connection combination. I have a Inspiron Laptop running BT broadband (right out in the back end of nowhere achieving a download speed of 3M, which is nowhere near BT’s claimed 10M +) and it took about 10 minutes. Once the software is downloaded, the software installation wizard kicks in. It is then simply a matter of following the on-screen instructions before restarting your computer for it to take effect. It really is that simple. However, prior to installation you must disable your existing antivirus software and totally uninstall it from your computer, otherwise the install will fail.

****Using and updating****

Like all bits of antivirus software Deluxe sits as an icon on the bottom toolbar monitoring internet use and alerting you when potential threats come along, which gives you the opportunity to take the appropriate action.

When Deluxe requires updating, like all antivirus programs do on a regular basis, you are informed and advised to take the appropriate action. The updating process takes ages, much longer than McAfee but as long as the computer is fully protected does it really matter? In addition to long updating times scanning also takes an age, again much longer than McAfee, and this is more problematic in my opinion. However, as all the scans were giving negative results, i.e. no problems, it appeared to be doing its job well.

****Price****

I paid .99 US for a year’s Deluxe protection, and this includes the complete package. Considering it came very highly rated by specialist sites and was considered to be better than more commonly known antivirus software I thought this was great value at the time.

****My experience****

The Deluxe appears to be highly rated in the world of computing and after seeing it in the top ten table of antivirus software from many “trusted” computer specialist sites I thought it would be ideal, and since it was rated higher than McAfee (which was my previous choice and had given me 5 years of trouble and problem free internet use) and Norton (which the computer systems where I work use) I truly believed I was on to a winner.

Once I started using Deluxe I noted that the speed of my computer increased. I had read reports that McAfee is notorious for slowing down computers, but since I had never used anything else on my home computer I never really appreciated just how much, so I was quite happy with Deluxe.

When the first round of updates came through and the “Issues that need fixing” box popped up I duly pressed the “fix” button and sat back and waited for Deluxe to do its thing. The process took ages, much longer than McAfee, but it finally reached the end. All issues, except for one were fixed so I repeated the process. Once again, it did not want to resolve one issue so I set it off again. After the fourth failure I gave in and went to contact PC Shield. The only contact details was an email address so I fired off an email for assistance.

Despite the unresolved issue the Deluxe appeared to be doing its job whilst I was using the computer and I got all the usual notifications about pop ups being blocked, and warnings that something was trying to be installed etc. etc. so I was not overly concerned. Besides, the unresolved issue was in respect of updates.

After two weeks of waiting I still had not received a reply from PC Shield so I fired off another email. A response came two days later giving a link to the download instructions, along with a couple of lines of text suggesting removing the software and re-installing it once more, ensuring that any trace of my previous antivirus software was eradicated. I must admit that this advice was pretty useless and they PC Shield were stating the obvious. Everyone knows that if you can’t get software working properly the first port of call is removal and re-installation, and this was something I had tried previously but to no avail. Not impressed with the advice I was given I sent another email and many subsequent emails but to this day I have never received a response.

The nail in the coffin for Deluxe arrived two weeks ago when I managed to get a virus, my first ever. Whilst using Ebay my computer crashed and after a reboot everything froze. I couldn’t use the internet, open a word document, view a spreadsheet, listen to an MP3, view a Jpeg or watch a DVD. I couldn’t do anything, other than run a virus scan with Deluxe.

My pop-ups were going crazy and they all stated my computer was infected with a virus. Shortly after I was directed to a website selling the Anti Virus Pro 2009 software where I was informed all problems would be sorted if I bought it. After clicking “no” and then closing the window I was directed to an adult site, and after closing this down I was directed to a Viagra site. This process went on and on whilst the computer was still running. As previously mentioned, I could run a scan with Deluxe which I did in order to identify what I had managed to pick up. The quick scan results showed no problems so I a deep and full scan was run. This also showed there were no problems. What was going on? Why was Deluxe not picking this up when there was clearly something wrong? Why did Deluxe not pick this up, and deal with this virus before it made it to my computer? After doing an internet search, on my McAfee protected notebook, it appeared I had managed to get the AV2009 virus which appeared to be quite common.

****The AV2009 virus****

As mentioned above this is a nasty little virus that blocks all files and features of your computer rendering it useless, and directing you to a website that sells antivirus software that will (supposedly) solve the problem. It appears that this software is a hoax, so if you are directed to this do NOT enter any credit card details at all. If you close this window you are directed to an adult site and then on to a site selling Viagra.

Whilst I had the virus I did some research on getting rid of the AV2009 virus, and whilst there were many articles, “how tos” and guides on Youtube, I couldn’t get one to work. I couldn’t even find one where I could reach the end of the process as I couldn’t connect to the internet on the infected computer. I didn’t want to spend a fortune getting a “specialist” to sort my computer out so I did a complete factory restore and lost everything. Luckily I had backed all the important stuff up, but I still lost a fair amount of stuff. Many people said I should have taken it to PC world or somewhere like that to get the data retrieved but after an event at work I am glad I chose the route I did.

The ironic thing was that the Thursday prior to me getting the virus one of the computers at work got a virus with the same symptoms I had, which we now know is the AV2009 virus, although we didn’t know this at the time. The computer was sent to a specialist for data retrieval and after spending a long time trying to retrieve the data they admitted defeat and wiped the hard drive. We were told there was nothing they could do and my employer was presented with a bill for £150. So, the same outcome was achieved but my employer parted with £150 in the process.

I admit that in the past I have been slack when it comes to backing up data and I only ever did it as my hard drive became full. Luckily, my Inspiron’s hard drive is only 40GB. I’d hate to think how much I would have lost if I had a more modern laptop with 240GB hard drive. I now ensure I back up my computer at least every other day, I appreciate it may be a bit of an overkill but the problems the AV2009 virus caused has made me a bit OTT, and I would strongly recommend other computer users back up on a regular basis as well.

****Conclusion****

Based on my experience, I would never recommend Deluxe 2009, and wouldn’t touch any other antivirus software that PC Shield currently offers, or will be offering in the future, and I this opinion will remain regardless of how many PC specialists recommend it or how cheap it may appear. Internet Safety and Security in the Business World.

Computer & Internet

In 2006, there were more than 4,000 new IT security vulnerabilities identified that could impact your daily computer operating systems. It is true, because larger firms have more resources, they are usually better protected as opposed to smaller to medium size firms. For small to medium sized firms It Security can become a challenge.

Some of the dangerous attacks on businesses were, Nimda, Code Red, SQL, Slammert, and Blaster. All of these attacks mentioned spread like wildfire through the Internet. Small Businesses, may be vulnerable to mass attacks in comparison to large corporations. An example of such an attack, “Mydoom” which struck with a vengeance in 2004. In addition, the “Mydoom” attack affected 1 in 3 small to medium business as compared to 1 in 6 large enterprises. There is one factor that makes Small to Medium business more prone to attack. Smaller companies tend to be homogenous in terms of their computer infrastructure. Approximately 90% of small businesses are running Windows on their servers on a day to day basis. About 75% of these companies use Outlook and Exchange on a daily basis.

In most cases, small businesses lack highly trained staff that can address IT security in an adequate manner. As previously mentioned, large companies have a definite advantage and the resources available to secure a highly skilled IT staff.

There are some excellent Industry Solutions that would solve many of the current problems small to medium sized companies are experiencing. Installing Routers. Routers provide high-tech “Packet Filtering”, and are used to enhance the security of a network. In addition, there are also some attacks that are performed on the router to optimize performance and reduce processing load on the entire system.

Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) ,will analyze all computer & Internet traffic and determine the legitimacy. The IDS System can look at traffic and make a determination weather or not it is a NIMDA attack. The system will alert all invalid or attack traffic.

Firewalls, installing good firewalls will restrict outbound access to traffic that is deemed legitimate by the company’s security policy. In addition, firewalls will allow outbound web access for employees only. Inbound access will normally be block.

Anti-Virus Software, will scan all emails and look for well defined viruses. Anti-Virus solutions can be implemented in each employees desktop computer, ASA, or email function. It is very important to keep all Anti-Virus Software updated, if not it can virtually become ineffective.

Virtual Private Network, provides critical security by allowing the internet to be used in a private manner. In addition, the VPN will allow data to be sent between employees which is encrypted. High security and Privacy is provided through the VPN while in transit, but it doesn’t secure endpoints from other attacks.

Spam Filtering is necessary and can be implemented directly on the email server. Spam provides protection against “Phishing” attacks. Phishing attacks, are mass messages that are crafted to look like legitimate mail from a bank or merchant. These attacks can be extremely dangerous because it asks recipient to verify and volunteer personal and secure information. Overall, Spam Filtering improves security and productivity within the work place.

There are certain things that small to medium sized companies need to do in order to examine their overall security threats and the value of current systems and applications being used. A). A security risk assessment must be performed. B). An information security policy must be developed and approved. This kind of policy is for managing and sharing sensitive data, monitor compliance, and lower IT costs and lower IT deficency rate. C). An adequate network must be designed and secured. D). Top notch Anti-Virus software must be installed on the system. E). An operating system must be used that has strong security baseline capabilities. F). Any unnecessary network applications must be removed for optimal performance. Installing or downloading useless programs only serves to slow down computer function hindering performance. G). Firewall software must be used at all times. Firewalls are critical especially for corporations. H). Strong Authentication needs to be used. No emails should ever be opened unless the origin and sender can be identified. I). A strong computer incidence response plan must be created. If problems do occur within the computer netwrok, they must be reported immediately and resolved promptly.

There are certain measures that smaller companies need to implement to protect their computer system. Making these changes could prove to be quite costly, but when it comes to computer security and the future of a business, it may be well worth the cost.
