Adam Shepard One Year Lived Review

How often do you think about the life experience? Do you feel like the poor guy who can’t reach the success because you don’t have any experience? Or, have you often regarded yourself as a successful person who want to experience something out of the box?

If you often think that way, perhaps an Adam Shepard One Year Lived could help you with some motivation, as he wrote through the book consist of 284 pages. The basic idea of the book reflecting – or at least he tries to show – one year experience of his life in numerous cities around the globe, starting from Raleigh (his hometown); Antigua in the Caribbean; Antigua, Guatemala; El Porvenir, Honduras; Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua; Auckland, New Zealand; Melbourne, Australia; Western Australia; Boracay Island, Philippines; Palma de Mallorca, Spain; to Zlatè Moravce, Slovakia.

What is his purpose? We may wonder this. But in essence, the purpose was perhaps too bare to not be seen by the reader, as written through a paragraph in Adam Shepard One Year Lived:

This life is serious: I want the wife, I want the babies, I want the business success, and I understand the work that is required ’till the wee hours to get them. But I didn’t want to leave any experience unloved before that happened. (Shepard, p. 9)

So the idea was “experience”. It is important entity/terminology that will help people sharpen the focus as when they start determining their purpose, and without traveling, the purpose won’t be easily reached out. In a whole book, Adam Shepard was trying to convince us about the importance of being a traveler. But however, it’s not about just a common travel. The essence of travel is to learn some lesson, some of which fully accompanied by all precious wisdoms, thoughts, and all things that may help us to grow up as quality individuals. Sure some of you might have not yet realized such an essence of travel, but at one time we do know it isn’t some kind of new thought. The basic idea proposed by Adam probably already experienced by others. Without saying much about that their lives, other people certainly know that “experience” is an entity to determine the quality of one’s life.

But however, it doesn’t mean that we need to put One Year Lived under the radar. All the knowledge that Adam told us through his book were nice and worth to read. If you like other tales of journeys, One Year Lived probably could bring so much sense of entertainment – but perhaps without a satori. “With a journey, I can make a small difference for the sake of my life and other’s life”, that’s what Adam tries to teach us.

Flexible Traveler

Travel

When you’re traveling, you have to be ready to be a flexible traveler… even when you’ve got your itinerary planned down to the last minute. There are just times when it doesn’t work out the way you planned.

You know it… the world is changing quickly all the time. With the internet and 24 hour news, travel is changing. It’s changed a lot since we started traveling. The world and your travel plans can even change WHILE you’re traveling.

The point is, while you may have things planned out, you have to at least be aware that you might have to change your plans… be a flexible traveler. You have to be prepared for changes.

Here’s our most extreme example…. We had just arrived in Nairobi, Kenya on September 11, 2001. A few hours after our arrival…. suddenly…. things were totally different in the world of travel….

In this most extreme of circumstances, our safari went off as planned. We couldn’t go home right away even if we wanted to, so we went forward. The biggest change then was the security on the flight home, and that we had to check EVERYTHING. Our airline gave us a plastic bag for our passports, pills, and glasses.

In less extreme examples, your tour operator could change hotels, or your cruise ship could change ports of call. One time we didn’t stop at a Caribbean port because of political unrest.

Ships may be delayed or rerouted because of weather. On a cruise around Antarctica, we had to skip one stop because the pack ice was way too thick.

Weather can certainly cause changes.

We were visiting Gombe National Park in Tanzania to see chimps. We had to leave the park the night before our flight from Kigoma rather than the morning of the flight because of a storm brewing on Lake Tanganyika. We still saw all the chimps, but back in Kigoma, we had time for a drive to the little town of Ujiji where Stanley met Livingstone…. you know, as in “Dr Livingstone I presume?” That change was a bonus.

Flights can be delayed due to weather. This applies in the middle of your trip as well as the beginning and end. We were going into the jungle in Peru, but weather delayed our flight to Puerto Maldonado. We had to overnight in that frontier town. The river wasn’t safe to navigate as late as we got in…. then we extended our trip for a day so we had our full time in the jungle.

Even with a group booking you might not be safe. We got left behind on a flight to Tibet because a Chinese delegation took our seats. The plane wasn’t overbooked, at least not until the government stepped in! So our tour operator gave us two more days seeing Nepal, and we got a private tour of Tibet instead of a small group tour…. We were more flexible and saw it all anyway.

Then there was the time the train derailed on the Altiplano in Peru on the way to Lake Titicaca! We got there much later at night than we planned, so we had to take a boat to the Floating Villages very early the next morning to fit it all in. We were the only ones there…. another bonus!

Do you have time to be a flexible traveler?

Most of the time, things will go just as you or your tour operator plan…. but weather, delayed flights, life, and world events can sometimes throw little “monkey wrenches” into the works…. Hurricanes happen. Roads wash out.

We feel that each trip is an adventure… be a flexible traveler… you might get more than you bargained for… enjoy it!

Business Travel

Travel

The globalization of trade and the World Trade Organization taking a leading role is defining new rules and policies in international trade and commerce. As a result, global and local business travel and their frequency acquired greater importance and urgency than ever before. Business travel for individuals and corporate executives is essential to maintain and promote business. If you intend to travel on a business mission, you should plan the itinerary of your travel carefully. New air travel companies are surfacing to join the race to attract customers. There is a great competition to provide better traveling facilities at competitive rates. Air service companies are coming up with ingenious schemes to lure customers. These schemes usually take the form of special airfare packages for certain destinations within given spaces of time. Since business trips are usually short, you can make use of packages that include return fares, hotel stays, rental cars and cabs for local transport, and other services. You should be careful to check whether you are being overcharged for your stay in the hotels to outbalance the undercharge on air tickets. You should also make sure the tickets in the flight you intend to board are available. You need to contact your travel agent well in time to avoid any last-minute hassles in obtaining the ticket. Before leaving for your destination, you should make note of the distance of the venue of your visit from the airport and the means of transport. You may be allergic to certain types of weather, such as the humidity during monsoon in destination cities that are located on seashore, or the dry air of metropolises that may crack your skin. If you are traveling to colder regions, you need to carry woolens and other cold-weather gear. You may not know the local language of the country or state you are visiting. You need a translator to communicate with your counterpart. Not the least important part of your planning should be getting to know the geographical situation as well as the time zone of the destination city you are going to visit. All these aspects of your business travel need careful consideration and thorough planning. 5. To make sure that we can contact you in case of an emergency, make a copy of your itinerary and leave it with someone at home.

6.

Travel light and not Pack the values that you do not want to lose. Leave your jewelry at home, but take the extra points if you can not live without them.

7. Remember, you are a foreigner, when you are traveling. You are a guest in their country, and therefore should comply with its laws, and to some extent, their customs. For example, if you’re a woman traveling in an Islamic state, be careful of your clothes.

8. Try not to bring too much attention to themselves while traveling. Do not go out like a tourist with a camera, showy and expensive clothing. Try a combination of scenery.

9. Travel in a group, where possible, and in known areas. There will be times you want to get from the tourist routes, so make sure you always have a traveling companion with you.

It is not uncommon for tourists to be drugged, and in trains and buses do not accept gifts of food or drink from strangers in public transport.

Discount Travel

Travel

Discount or budget travel involves a good deal of groundwork, planning and collating relevant information. Some of the best ways to get that great air deal are searching the Internet and visiting airline agencies. Airline companies that have just entered the industry offer a great deal of promotional fares. However, it is advisable to check different promotional offers and find the cheapest, instead of settling for the first that you chance upon.

Frequent flier miles, student fares and senior citizen discounts are other options. Discount travelers should keep a flexible travel schedule. If the promo of an airline states that they only give discounts on a certain day of the week, departure dates should coincide with the same. Monday is usually the busiest day of the week in the airline industry; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays are the days that have fewer reservations, so tickets are sold cheap on these days.

Some airlines offer travel packages such as car rental or hotel room discounts along with the air ticket.

Another option is approaching consolidators or discount travel agents who buy blocks of tickets and sell them at reduced prices.

Budget travel guides can prove pretty useful in planning your trip. The Internet is a great resource for online budget travel guides. Some of the old, trusted methods of discount travel are heading out in the off-season, advance booking, visiting ticket consolidators (discount travel agents) and finding combination deals. The online travel guides offer these and more tips.

The popular online budget travel guides are lonelyplanet.com, iexplore.com, frommers.com, hobotraveler.com, sleepinginairports.net, bargaintravel.com and budgettravel.com.

10best.com offers the best travel guides for select destinations, and recommendations and deals on hotels and vacation packages. Budgettravelonline.com is another great site for finding the best deals for your budget vacation. They offer free email newsletters, and you can also subscribe to their magazine, Budget Travel, for a price. You can also find information on discount deals and tips in budget travel magazines.

Active Travel

Travel

There seems to be a whole vocabulary for those who sell travel. Active travel, adventure travel, leisure travel, eco-tourism. Do you really need to know what it all means? Not really. In the grand scheme of things you define your own travel style, and it may change from day to day.

You may go to an island and choose to sit on the beach one day, and go scuba diving the next. You may spend a day in the spa that resort has down in a palm grove and go bike riding the next. You’re active one day and quiet as a slug the next.

But if you are signing up for a tour, you should find out what that particular tour operator means when they say active travel. In general, an active tour will focus more on travel and transportation that requires physical activity… walking or cycling as opposed to riding along in a van or bus.

Most tours that fall into this category have a lot of outdoor activities.

OK, you say, but you can do a lot of walking if you’re sightseeing in a big city.

You’re right, even museum tours or garden tours can give you a workout, but active travel sort of indicates that you will be outdoors and biking or hiking or rafting or even horseback riding.

Some companies spell it out for you pretty well… they’ll tell you the activity level that will be required for the whole tour…

Will there be a lot of hiking or walking? For how many hours or how many miles or kilometers. Will there be lots of stairs or hills to climb? They may even have a “scoring” system all the way from easy to difficult… of course, you need to know what their definition of easy is!

A trekking company, for instance, might say Level One, or Easy is 3-5 hours of walking up to six miles a day with low altitude…. While Level Four or Strenuous is 5-8 hours of hiking in mountainous terrain at higher elevations.

Will you be staying in hotels? Or mountain huts where you share a bunkhouse arrangement with other travelers? Or will you be camping…. sleeping in tents? Your tour operator should give you an idea of the type of accommodations you can expect from rugged or spartan to luxury. You could be going on an African safari in the middle of the Kalahari, but if you stayed in a tent at Jack’s Camp, you would definitely find yourself reveling in the luxury category… and still be active in your travels.

You may even find that you relieve more “workaday” anxieties and frustrations with active vacations than you would just sitting on the beach, eating and drinking the night away. Activity is good for you, and sometimes it leaves you just a little tired and more relaxed at the end of the day.

Brochures may use the terms active or adventure travel interchangeably. We think of adventure travel as a little more of a reach…. something that is more apt to get you a little out of your comfort zone. Active travel doesn’t necessarily do that…. but it may make you break a sweat.

And what’s wrong with that?
