Flexible Traveler

When you’re traveling, you have to be ready to be a flexible traveler… even when you’ve got your itinerary planned down to the last minute. There are just times when it doesn’t work out the way you planned.

You know it… the world is changing quickly all the time. With the internet and 24 hour news, travel is changing. It’s changed a lot since we started traveling. The world and your travel plans can even change WHILE you’re traveling.

The point is, while you may have things planned out, you have to at least be aware that you might have to change your plans… be a flexible traveler. You have to be prepared for changes.

Here’s our most extreme example…. We had just arrived in Nairobi, Kenya on September 11, 2001. A few hours after our arrival…. suddenly…. things were totally different in the world of travel….

In this most extreme of circumstances, our safari went off as planned. We couldn’t go home right away even if we wanted to, so we went forward. The biggest change then was the security on the flight home, and that we had to check EVERYTHING. Our airline gave us a plastic bag for our passports, pills, and glasses.

In less extreme examples, your tour operator could change hotels, or your cruise ship could change ports of call. One time we didn’t stop at a Caribbean port because of political unrest.

Ships may be delayed or rerouted because of weather. On a cruise around Antarctica, we had to skip one stop because the pack ice was way too thick.

Weather can certainly cause changes.

We were visiting Gombe National Park in Tanzania to see chimps. We had to leave the park the night before our flight from Kigoma rather than the morning of the flight because of a storm brewing on Lake Tanganyika. We still saw all the chimps, but back in Kigoma, we had time for a drive to the little town of Ujiji where Stanley met Livingstone…. you know, as in “Dr Livingstone I presume?” That change was a bonus.

Flights can be delayed due to weather. This applies in the middle of your trip as well as the beginning and end. We were going into the jungle in Peru, but weather delayed our flight to Puerto Maldonado. We had to overnight in that frontier town. The river wasn’t safe to navigate as late as we got in…. then we extended our trip for a day so we had our full time in the jungle.

Even with a group booking you might not be safe. We got left behind on a flight to Tibet because a Chinese delegation took our seats. The plane wasn’t overbooked, at least not until the government stepped in! So our tour operator gave us two more days seeing Nepal, and we got a private tour of Tibet instead of a small group tour…. We were more flexible and saw it all anyway.

Then there was the time the train derailed on the Altiplano in Peru on the way to Lake Titicaca! We got there much later at night than we planned, so we had to take a boat to the Floating Villages very early the next morning to fit it all in. We were the only ones there…. another bonus!

Most of the time, things will go just as you or your tour operator plan…. but weather, delayed flights, life, and world events can sometimes throw little “monkey wrenches” into the works…. Hurricanes happen. Roads wash out.

We feel that each trip is an adventure… be a flexible traveler… you might get more than you bargained for… enjoy it!

Without having to go in to the program, it simply shows what I have coming up and what time it’s scheduled for.  It might not be a groundbreaking bit of tech, but it is very good and saves having to open up outlook when I’m just checking my diary.

There are a large number of desktop gadgets which are specifically designed to pass a little bit of time, and I was close to including the sidebar version of Tetris which has amused me plenty, but I’ve ended up going for hangman.

Exactly the same as the game you played with friends as a child, you get presented with a word or phrase and have to choose the letters until you’ve been able to guess what it is, or the hangman is completed.

These are only a small amount of the desktop gadgets which are available, and I’ve only covered a few of the desktop gadgets that I actually use myself.

While some of these are great for saving a bit of time, and having information ready on my desktop rather than having to use an internet window to navigate and find that information, it doesn’t necessarily have to be useful though, there are plenty like the HAL 9000 gadget, which is simply a button you push, and plays quotes from the 2001 film.

I have witnessed him try and go through many more gadgets than your average person. One of the things that he purchased recently was a GPS unit for his car. And while the GPS unit is certainly helpful, it is also incredibly dangerous. There was one occasion in particular after he had just purchased this GPS unit that we were driving in his car and were almost involved in an accident simply because he was trying to figure out how to fix the directions on the device. Imagine that! The GPS unit was giving us the wrong directions, and instead of pulling the car over to the side of the road or off of the road all together so that he could address the problem, he did what most people would have done which is try to fix the problem while you are driving.
While this is a classic example of gadgets in vehicles acting as a distraction, it is certainly not the only example.

Today, we live in a technologically savvy society. From pagers to smart phones to iPods to GPS devices, DVD players and other sorts of knick knacks, there is no shortage of gadgets and gizmos out there to take our attention away from where it should be: on the road. People neglect to take into account the fact that it only takes a fraction of a second of not having your eyes on the road to lose control of your vehicle or for someone else to strike your vehicle from a different angle. If this is the case, how will you have time to properly react? The answer is that you would not have any time to react. If you are lucky, you’ll walk away from an accident without a scratch.
So, what should be done about gadgets and other devices for vehicles? Should they be banned? As it is, law prohibits anyone from mounting or viewing a DVD player from the front seat of their cars. However, it is still allowable to have DVD players installed in the backs of seats within vehicles. This serves as a great distraction to those who are driving behind a vehicle equipped with DVD players in them. I cannot tell you how many times I have driven with other people who have made it their goal to figure out what the person in front of us had playing on their DVD player. This is incredibly dangerous! If you must equip your vehicle with gadgets, then try to make sure that you only use them sparingly. For instance, if you are bringing your iPod along for the ride, before you have even accelerated from a stopped position, make sure that the play list you want is selected before you proceed any further. Try to avoid flipping through songs or looking down to see what artist is singing what song, etc. It could wind up saving your life someday to pay attention to the roads surrounding you.
